Visual Storytelling Consulting Services

Here’s how to work with me

I’m here to help you develop a project from its inception, to advance an existing project to conclusion or give you a one-hour review of your work.

Time was this role would have been called picture editing, meaning that I respond to your work in a variety of ways: advise you on how best to produce a project, whether it’s just an idea or is well along; I select what I think the strongest photographs you’ve produced are and guide you to create more powerful and consistently successful photographs.

Regardless of how you want me to engage with you and your work, our connection starts with a conversation to establish goals for the engagement and a process to achieve those goals.

Then you’d send me a set of pictures to review and respond to. How many pictures varies with the scope of the effort.

I’ll select what I think are the strongest photos that you send me, in a hierarchy, and build them into whatever outcomes we’ve set as that part of our goals. Typical outcomes are a sequenced selection for a book, a grant, competition entries, pitches to publications or web presentations.

You can join the selection process or not - it does take longer for us to review work together. If we do the edit together the sessions can be recorded for your future reference.

After the edit or edits are complete I send them to you and we schedule a time to talk about your work and the outcomes.

With every engagement I also advise you on what you’re doing that produces your strongest work and talk to you about ways to make strong photographs more consistently. I’ll also note things that you’re doing that don’t lead to successful work.

My fee

Project work: Rates are hourly and vary depending on the scope of our effort, the larger it is, and therefore the more hours involved, the lower the hourly rate. There is a three-hour minimum for project consulting.

Organizations and Businesses

Photography can be an extraordinary tool to reach your clients or customers but only if the photography has power.

Mike has worked for and with a variety of organizations—large and small—to produce the visual content for books, magazines, websites and newspapers in settings as diverse as National Geographic Magazine, The White House and Syracuse University. In each of these settings the work Mike has helped to create was judged to be the best. He can create the same level of work for you.

Here's what Mike can do for your business publication or organization:

  • Connect you with just the right photographer for your needs, choosing from the hundreds of extremely talented photographers he knows. Mike will work with that photographer to produce a body of photographs for you.

  • Using their work, collaborate with your team to create a book, a website or other printed or digital products to tell your story.

Rates: Please contact Mike for an estimate.
